The
local town of Paphos (15 minutes drive) is a particularly
attractive part of Cyprus and was the capital of Cyprus
in ancient times. Paphos has a pleasant harbour and medieval
fort as well as many shops and restaurants. The whole area
is steeped in history with many archaeological sites, including
10 sites on the UNESCO
World Heritage List, within easy driving distance.
The resort of Coral Bay (10 minutes drive)
has sandy beaches and wide selection of bars and restaurants.
Five minutes drive to the north finds you at the fishing
village of Agios Georgios with a wonderful seafood restaurant
over looking the sea. This road then continues into the
Akamas peninsula, an area of natural wilderness with dramatic
coastlines, sandy coves and scenic nature trails. Head inland
and you will find attractive tavernas and lovely views in
the many small villages. The Troodos mountains are well
worth a visit combining nature trails and scenery with the
ancient history of the Byzantine churches. At a height of
almost 2000m the mountains can give a welcome break from
the summer or the opportunity to ski in the winter.
There
are good connecting highways if you decide to explore further
afield and the old quarter of Nicosia, the capital, is well
worth a visit with it's Venetian sandstone fortress walls,
moat and narrow streets with overhanging balconies. Nicosia
also has a number of ancient mosques and churches as well
as the museum of Byzantine icons.

The southern slopes of the Troodos mountains
above Limassol and Paphos are well known for their vineyards.
You can follow wine routes in both these areas and take
in some wine tasting on the way. For those keen on rambling
E-path E4 is nearby and will take you inland to the hills
above Paphos or into the Akamas peninsula. Either way takes
you through areas of exceptional beauty and significant
ecological, historical and cultural interest. If you are
interested in birds there are several endemic bird species
and hundreds of migrants passing through. The nearby Akamas National Park offers wonderful opportunities for walking and wildlife.

Cyprus has something to offer for most interests
and Cypriots are welcoming and hospitable making a good
combination for a wonderful holiday destination.
